About
I’m a journalist. For years I worked in industry but decided to return to my first profession a couple of years back and it’s great…. My first name is taken from the composer Haydn, the surname, Shaughnessy is Irish.
I own the art gallery which you can see by following this link. The gallery specialises in new media art. Though I’ve been writing for some years about the media and about social media technology and convergence (you can read my Convergence Culture column on the Irish Times’ website), more recently I have been writing about design. As I got more into design and at the same time the gallery evolved into an exciting location for art, I got to thinking more about my background in media and how artists handle new media - hence the recent change of direction here. I want to understand how new media as I use it - blogs, aggregators etc- the decline of old media, and the rise of new media art all affect each other.
I write regularly in the Irish Times but sadly the site is subscription based so to read my stuff you need to pay Euro 2 for a day pass. In the past I’ve written in the Wall St Journal, The Times, New Statesman, Radio Times, NRC Handelsblad, New Society (now deceased), and the Times Higher Education Supplement, and I’ve made films for the BBC and Channel 4.
