This Is Not A Brand

I started the gallery in the belief that it would give me a stable income without a huge amount of effort but I find I’m putting huge amounts of effort into novel projects. Fragments is coming up soon (more about that later) and a new project This Is Not a Brand is warming up over on Thisisnotabrand.wordpress.com. We’re due to launch soon with a duct-tape wallet from Jon Coffelt. In the meantime I spent yesterday designing a logo for it. Here is my favourite.

Yes it is banal but that is part of the point. This Is Not a Brand products will be art works that can be used in everyday life so the idea is This Is Not A Brand, This Is A Work Of Art which clearly this logo is not.

I had to sort of laugh at this, but it’s out of a great depth of appreciation for creative people. We are so good at kidding ourselves and if any of us think we can create a forum or a venue for our creative works and others and not become totally obsessed with it, it’s crazy!
But it’s a beautiful crazy. We wouldn’t be the sort of people we are if it weren’t that way.
I was talking to an artist last night who’s involved in a lot of great stuff in Philadelphia. Blogging, fine art, documentary, etc. I could tell as I was talking to him that he was forcing himself to only talk to me about the things he’s really doing, meanwhile, his mind is firing away with other ideas, other projects, that come to him all the time and that he ALSO wants to try.
    It’s painful. It’s awesome.
anyway, your gallery is a long way from Philadelphia, but if it’s attracting a following then I bet that only drives your desire to pour more into it more, so congratulations.

    Oh, if I had a following….

But you’re right.I think society is too dominated by IT culture which has stripped creativity out. Now IT is going social there’s a chance to put it back in. Watch out for the duct tape wallets. I think it’ll be an awesome project.
