Comments Broken, But Some Thoughts Getting Through

One disadvantage of a broken comments table is people are having to e-mail me when they want to make a point. A bit inconvenient I know but the upside is it allows me to organise the collective thought process.
I got this from Ryan Rassmussen this morning and I am very happy to connect with him.
“Paul Otlet influenced my own understanding of digitally augmented cognition in a unique way.

The convergence of raw data distribution in a living network, such as the form by which the web appears to be evolving, paves new roads for perception and communication. I think the biggest impact emergent methods of communication will have upon our future is with new modes temporal contextualization.”
And from Will
“Blogging is, sadly clique-ish. I’m glad that the long lists for the blog awards were leaked since that means that I’m finding blogs of interest outside my circle. A homeless blogger is usually operating in a very small clique. And boy would such a perspective be useful at a “camp”"
And I want to bring Vern into the conversation if I can because Vern and I regularly exchange ideas in this area.
What Ryan’s drawing attention to is our ability to think is augmented by the digital though we may not yet know how, and the impact of that will be felt most keenly when interfaces move away from the keyboard.
My own take on it for now is that we need novel ways to organise ideas. I don’t see search engines, directories or recommendation systems providing any real insights, or moving knowledge on.
I see blogging being a kind of addendum to newspapers and other media, without moving us on to a different understanding of how society works.
There are many ways in which society is changing and it’s be good to list them out
There’s a long term move against conventional literacy. The need to search for and find precision in the metaphorical cloud between what happens and how we represent it is forgotten.
The functions of memory are changing. We memorialise less. The celebration of the individual is taking over from commemmorative behaviour. This is linked to….
There are too many untellable stories, too many taboo areas where we can’t explore our collective past and its impact on the present. That means we have to maintain the appearance of moral superiority somewhat desperately and unconvincingly.
Ideas proliferate as do possibilities but those with advertising attached are the ones that live. This connects to the fact that
Most messages we, the non-professional media create - only really gain traction when the ad world co-opts them. We’ve yet to change the structure of media - have ads, can play.
Our new minds need new structures of expression, communication. There must be some way to structure the collective conversation so that it makes sense in a way other than being new, exciting, radical, or a departure. It should be possible to match that body of opinion with the new ways we think.
