Xing or Facebook

Checking through some group sites over the weekend I was left asking myself is Facebook a patch on Xing. Previously Open Business and now surely the largest business networking site, Xing has groups like the Hamburg Connection (10,000 member CSR Group); Sustainable Management Group, Helsinki Connection; all active.
Xing’s main drawback, interms of the hype machine, is probably its European origins. Even without the Facebook hype it has millions of members. For me, this raises an important issue of perception.
Great things happen in Europe without the fanfare that our American colleagues can give a product. It’s really the gift of people like Mike Arrington that they’ve been able to become ruthless media tycoons - with, naturally, a predisposition towards American culture. I sense even as the Valley’s hold on innovation is slipping, its ability to talk the best game in town is now. As a writer I’m envious and as a European I’d like to see us find our own way of influencing these developments.
