Service Innovation

Had a fascinating chat a couple of days back with Chris Down of Livework a couple of days back - for an article I’m writing on service innovation.

Livework were asked by Fiat’s Multipla to look at how the car could be more embedded with services rather than just being a product. One of Livework’s conclusions was that car keys are a barrier to the service-enablement of a car. Of course we tend to think nowadays of car keys as essential ways of stopping cars from being stolen. No key, no steal.

Livework’s point though is broad that access to cars can be desirable. Though Fiat may take some convincing, Livework have now spun that idea into a service with Streetcar, a London-based company that have a dense network of Volkswagen Golfs around the streets of London.

People can now rent a Streetcar from as short a period as one hour and get the unlock code through their mobile phones.

Every car shared takes 6 parked cars off the road so it’s good for the environment and it’s a good example of combining services with products. More and more designers are telling me that is the way forward - service design.
