Ryan and Donncha in the Gallery

Ryan Whalley and Donncha O’Caoimh are two photographers I admire greatly and I’ve been trying to get them into the gallery every since we opened. The gallery’s mission is to promote people who have unusual talent but who might struggling to make their breakthrough because for example their technique is particularly innovative. Clearly the case of photography is different. It’s an accepted art form. Still, photobloggers can do with a push and that’s what we’re trying to do.
The sticking point has been how to print and frame at the best possible standards and still have a margin of profit. Photography doesn’t sell well in Ireland even when we’re talking about photographers of this quality.
Part of the problem is the persistence of the Irish landscape oil-on-canvas. It’s a kind of safe haven for Irish artists. Want to sell? Paint it green.
An additional problem is I wanted to print at a very high standard. Courtesy of Hewlett Packard I eventually got to use their z3100 and z 6100 machines which print with 12 and 8 inks respectively. I also wanted to use heavy durable paper and Vivera inks which have a no-fade lifespan exceeding 150 years.
Those prints are now done and hanging in the gallery. All the cost means there is still not much margin in there but if you are a fan of photoblogging and you want to support two great Irish exponents please visit the site and order an image. We’re mounting them on a plinth and framing them in a grey/silver. The total cost of the framing alone exceeds Euro 70 so what you’re getting is the best production standards possible. As yet there is no ecommerce on the site - I don’t want charge backs on credit card orders - but just sign up and leave us a message and we will get back to you. let me finish by saying these images are stunning and they come at around 58cm x 43cm, which is big and beautiful.

[…] Haydn’s Gallery in Kinsale is now showing my work and Ryan’s as of this week. I visited the framer on Monday where I signed a number of prints and I have to say I’m very impressed with the prints made by those Hewlett Packard Z3100 and Z6100 printers. I wish I could print all my stuff on them! […]
