The Blog vs Facebook

It seems Facebook can even drive people out of business - the blogging business anyway. I know other people have been covering this but I wanted to throw my twopence worth. Ambuscading makes the point that streams of consciousness work better on Facebook and of course Facebook/twitter come to resemble colelctive streams of conscousness. There was a debate on the Globe and Mail reported on Alex Saunders’ blog - should Facebook be an open social network…. well we all want to be open.

What is the real issue? My Facebook newsfeed tends to fill up with people’s one-liners about how they are feeling whereas the news that seemed useful to me tells me what they might be doing or how and when I might contact them. It’s handy to know someone is away for the weekend, gone home early, flying off and uncontactable. The rest of it is fun if you have the time.

Equally useful were the groups, being able to clue into new formations around the world - like the London new media scene.

Something about it though feels like avoidance therapy. People I know from blogging have turned up in my Facebook friends but I’m not sure I’ve got to know them any better. In fact I’d say we now avoid the moment when we should meet. We know what each other are doing and there’s a bit of the sowhat about stepping into the same room.

Ian Delaney is someone I met via blogging but have never actually met though we are Facebook friends and members of the same groups. I think the electronic network is putting off the day when we really meet. I think that’s bad.

Kent Newsome is another known to me only electronically. Mark Evans is someone I knew briefly through the wires but such is the speed of building contacts that I guess we both just got swamped. I picked up on Mark again through Shel Israel’s work in progress. I need to go through my LinkedIn contacts to see who else comes and goes. Great writers like Kav who I just can’t keep up with.

I question myself about this. What are we doing building these links? part self-promotion, part oppportunity gazing, part just fun.

Anyway enough of that. Today I’m hoping to take another step towards reopening the gallery, I have a meeting with the framer in the afternoon so a little tied up mid-day but otherwise pretty free to talk. Am reconsidering my writing career as it seems to be going nowhere fast or strong.

As of today I am back in the market for consulting work. It worries me that I’ll be stepping into an already overcrowded market of social media consultants but my strengths anyway are content creation and research.

As of tomorrow I’m going to start posting about the new book I want to write and would really love some feedback on it at the concept stage. Speak later.
