Art Gallery Website

I’m connected at last. Should have been something I thought of straight away. Now the blog resides on a button on www.galleryica.com and it means I can blog a little about the gallery here.

Why set it up? I think there’s an inadequate realisation of just how powerful a cultural tool the computer has become for creative expression. By and large computing technology has been a straight jacket for people like me, a non-techie. Since they became so prevalent my job has diminished in quality. Whereas I used to go out and talk with people before I wrote about them, not it is all done on the phone; whereas you used to have a week to write, now you have to get it done in a day. This is white collar productivity, downgraded quality, plenty of output. So I’m kind of chained to the desk and most of what I see during the day is here on a monitor right in front of me.

But then there’s a bunch of people who’ve used the digital to create new imagery, who’ve taken the imagination in new directions and who are bridging the gap between computing and culture.

Earlier this year I was wondering should I try to organise a conference to explore the merger of technology and content. But it meant trying to raise enthusiasm among a whole group of people before even beginning to put the conference together. The gallery is something I can do on my own to raise awareness. That’s why I went for it.

Can’t help but see an overlap between this comment and the post about writers and editors. As you said, “I don’t think publishers value writers any more. They want to move product.”

So the writing that the publishers no longer value has been devalued by the approach they take to publishing that writing. Does that mean they’ve only got themselves to blame?

Sorry, I know this is nothing to do with the main point of your post.

    Hi Kav

I think they’re in a panic because they think the industry is chaning faster than it really is. And that gives the less scrupulous a chance to cut fees , wages and staff. So certainly one noticeable feature is some of the principles have gone out of publishing.
