Second Life Stats

I was looking up a few Second Life stats after looking at alt-zoom earlier. When I wrote about SL for the Irish Times back in September there were 750,000 members. There are now 1.5 million. About 75,000 are logging on each day and spending an average of 3 hours each there. Nissan, Toyota, IBM, Starwood Hotels, Reuters, SUN are some of the businesses with a presence there.
When I heard Philip Rosedale, Linden Labs founder, talk about SL, also back in September, he waxed lyrical about the learning curve of virtual worlds. Far from dumbing people down, which is often the argument with games use, he claimed it actually poses people serious learning opportunities, just to come to terms with avatar use and the rules of a virtual world.
I was skeptical of that but am gradually turning round to his view. I am currently in Second Life trying to get my underwear inside my denims and it ain’t easy.
