Ambassador Blog

It’s rare to get somebody who has been prominent within the diplomatic community blogging openly about the experience. I put Craig Murray’s The State Without post as the lead news headline on Wripe.net today because he has powerful criticisms not just of the war on terror (which is something I feel more ambivalent about) but on the US-UK special relationship, which is something I’ve tried to criticise on film.
Craig Murray was British Ambassador to Uzbekistan from August 2002 to October 2004. The State Within is a BBC drama that according to Murray is causing waves within the trans-Atlantic establishment. Writes Murray:
“I spoke with a senior BBC contact. They sounded about as nervous to speak with me as my FCO friends, but told me that The State Within had terrified the BBC top brass because of its attack on the special relationship and the war on terror.”
“In fact the world of The State Within is more real than you might imagine. There may yet be a story twist to please the conservatives. But already the BBC has produced something brave, relevant and timely.”
My own experience trying to criticise the special relationship was that most people didn’t understand what I was talking baout. Times have changed in that respect.
Murray has a book out: Murder in Samarkand. Good luck to him.
