Wising up to the TV

This is an interesting compilation of stuff going on around the TV set, most of the products cover make the TV a multimedia centre and obviously they introduce a lot of computing power.

It’s a ZDNet article so maybe it’ll spread the word. When I watch my kids working with the TV it goes like this. Watch Drake and Josh. Get told to turn it off. Go to the computer and watch it there. Turn to a computer game. Get told to stop playing on the computer. Go to the TV and pick up a game on the SKY console.

In other words they see no difference between the two screens. They don’t mind watching Drake and Josh on a small screen and they don’t mind playing lousy games on SKY.

So I say again, the future of TV is really about apps. To date convergence has brought the geek world into the content world but it hasn’t made it massively easier for non-geeks to do software. I mean we can all publish now in simple ways but I want to create applications. I guess my kids will want to too. And they and me want to do everything as easily on the TV as we will on the PC.

Exactly the same for my monsters but now with added Disney convergence in the shape of “Highschool Musical”. See the movie on the Disney channel, check it out on the web and then buy the CD online. Probably on iTunes too. “Fame” brought slap bang up to date.

All I need now is for the Nintendo DS game to come out and I’m completely screwed.
