Veeker and the Mobile Crunch’s Sneek Peek - But More Uploading, Really?

“Veeker is instant video messaging. The most basic use case is to shoot
60 seconds of video from your mobile phone and upload this video to
Veeker in the form of an MMS. Within about 60 seconds your video is on
the Veeker portal where, depending upon whether you sent it to one of
three addresses is visible only by you (me@veeker.com) visible to you
and your contacts (v@veeker.com) or made available for viewing by
anyone who visits Veeker and is inclined to check you out
(world@veeker.com).
Mobilecrunch gets further excited: “I was struck by the sheer number of uses for the application. This isn’t
simply a social networking toy or a Web 2.0 feature built for
acquisition, it really is a new and more efficient means of
communication. Imagine getting an opinion from a spouse when clothes
shopping - or advice from an expert while trying to solve some complex
mechanical problem that couldn’t possibly be explained in words, but is
easily understood when seen. If you’re anything like me, once you play
with the application for a little while you’ll see how easy it would be
to depend upon it as a primary means of delivering information
efficiently - which is exactly what it does and is exactly why I
predict it will be massively popular.”
Here’s a comment from their site: “The two biggest failure in Europe’s mobile market in the past few years
are MMS and videocalling. The technology is embedded in 75% of all
phones sold, but less than 0,1% are actually using it. I’m surprised to
see that Veeker makes those technologies the cornerstones of their
businessmodel. Personally I wouldn’t invest a penny in this venture.”
I’d pretty much go with that and wonder what got mobilecrunch so worked up. The response was well it’s the ability to upload to a website that makes it different.
True And there is some social software around it. But uploading is primitive. It’s also made YouTube a billion. But in terms of what people could do an upload is first base, so you want to see a new service take the game onto a new level.
