The New York Times’ vidcast this morning reports on Image Metrics’ new image mapping software, a product that facilitates auto-generated animation for the movie industry.
It works like this - Image Metrics’ software allows film-makers to map the deteail of human performance, particularly facial performance and then to produce animation from it. Humans perform, the cartoon speaks.
And it works across the range of human expressions translating eye movement, expression and lip movement, perfectly. It can work with cartoon characters and with characters from old movies.
The piece shows the digital film-making has plenty of innovation and cost reduction right ahead of it. But it also shows that a major media player like the NYT can indeed keep ahead of the game.
I find myself drawn more rather than less to the NYT and Washington Post - perhaps because they keep turning up on techmeme and digg.
