Google and Video Ads

There are plenty of clever ways to advertise on the web but clever for who? The Idea Dude some time back said that google ads depend in some immeasurable way on creating unsatisfying content on your site. People can’t find what they want so they’re tempted by a text link.

I’m sure it’s not anything like the whole explanation for Ad Words’ success but I’ve been there. Disappointed by what I see on a page, hauling off through an adlink.

There are better ideas coming through. Gabe Rivera’s sponsored blogposts. Nooked’s RSS marketing An idea or two no doubt in the pipeline.

So when you think of these innovations and their popularity what would your reaction be to video ads?

When I go to websites that insist that they serve me up ads before I access content, I don’t.

I don’t access the content and I don’t watch the ad. And when a voice tells me I’m going to get a brief ad before I can watch a great video, it has to be a real must watch video for me not to click-out. I think I’ve watched one of those ads so far.

With video I am far, far more discerning in what I’ll devote time to. I trust myself to make a snap judgement when I read text; when I get shown video I won’t trust the video distributor’s judgement of what might interest me as an ad.

I find also, getting back to text ads, the webpage usually gives me a choice of 4 or 5 to read (sometimes 24), whereas with video it’s their choice. I don’t like that. Why do I get no choice?

I can’t see, apart from these emotional reactions, that there is a default go-to-the-ad reaction awaiting me in video environments. If you’re really going to subject me to 3 minutes of dissatifaction I am leaving your site for good.

These are my reasons for saying I think video ads will have a much tougher time than text ads ever did.
