Over at a mashable story, ESPN launches netvibes for sports, Franck Poisson from Webwag has made an interesting comment on the spread of startpages.

My feeling is that Webwag have created a brand new web (way?) to surf the web and to read content: mouse-over preview, self-organization of my page, multi-mini windows in one browser page etc…This new standart will soon be spread all arount the web. ESPN is just the first of a long list of media site that soon will be “webwaggized” by their publisher.

I like the plug for Webwag. And I think Franck is right. If you have an audience netvibe it - sorry Franck, webwagise it.

The question it raises of course is why not simply use Webwag or netvibes to draw in ESPN content to an existing startpage. And the answer is probably that there are millions of ESPN viewers who haven’t heard of webwag or netvibes, so it’s a handy route for webwag and netvibes to sell their technology and reach a wider audience.

I expect also there comes a time when you say enough searching, I want to take a break. The start page is like the homestead, a place to take that little break, a place many people are going to be a whole lot happier in watching a game.
