Ad Dollars Up.

This debate sprang up today: Online ad dollars are down.

“Researchers had predicted that 10% of overall advertising spending this year would go online. Meanwhile, it ended up at 7% of budgets.”

The argument is start-ups had better watch out because just as they’re beginning to grow the grass cutter comes along.

I’m not convinced. I am convinced that Google owning 25% of on line ad revenue is trouble - unless the Web community can persuade them to part with more to content owners and improve their contextual technology and control click fraud better.

And while I think about it to find ways of differentially rewarding sites - some kind of public service ethos extended to the web that rewards content in the same way that traditional content producers would have had different budgets…. but I’m rambling.

Does anybody out there really know whether online spending is up or down? All today’s debate is telling us is it’s not grown as much as anticipated at the start of the year.
