I wrote this Friday.

The editor of Business 2.0 is asking every journalist at his magazine to create a blog. And in a possible first for a major publisher, the participating bloggers at the Time Inc. title will be paid based on their traffic.

And this today:

And the latest news is…. Buzzmachine caught up with this story today arguing it may influence journalists to whore themselves for clicks.

“Is there danger in this? Of course. One can be corrupted by the siren call of popularity and, worse, money. But if one corrupts one’s product and credibility along the way, then you can bet that the audience will see through the manipulation, become disenchanted, and leave. That is true of newspapers, magazines, TV shows, and blogs. And in the case of the Business 2.0 bloggers, they can also lose their jobs.”

Audiences do not see through the manipulation and leave. Often they don’t see through anything - that’s why mobile phone companies make huge profits (I heard the joke in consulting that at the end of an assignment with a mobile company you’d say now you know your strategy, so go cheat your customers anyway).

Some audiences often see through the manipulation and enjoy it, tell their friends, feel post-modern.

Others live a full life deluded.

So who are these perfectly rational public people that see through manipulation and leave? What’s the post-code or zip code? I think they need an advert.
