Cross Media, Crossed Wires

At the cross media conference in Amsterdam two distinct lines of thinking are obvious among presenters in the early stages.

Presenters Michael Johnson (Pixar) and John Underkoffler (Minority Report adviser) are stressing narrative and winning the devotion of audiences. Gary Carter (freemantle, UK) is emphasising how media organisations are losing power.

I don’t say these are antagonistic positions - presumably winning devotion helps retain power but Gary was also pointing out that the personalisation of media trivialises it - I mean once everybody can produce content the significance of any piece of content is reduced, it loses its mystique.

I wonder if Hollywood is ready for that. I found Gary the more convincing but so far I’ve done him little justice in paraphrasing his talk. WIll come backlater with more detail. What he also said is we are transforming ourselves in this process.
