WebWag, European Web 2.0 Goes to the US

The news that Webwag will locate in Palo Alto saddens some of us, though anybody here in Europe who has had to deal with the limited imagination of v-cs, and who tries seeking support from the public sector because that’s the only recourse, will sympathise a little with European entrepreneurs who want to ramp up their businesses.

I get the feeling this time round Europe’s better at doing entrepreneurism and start-ups. Better but still not good.

I know of a couple of social software projects that tried five years ago but got nowhere because VCs failed to understand content and community as businesses. And anyway they could understand e-commerce.

Webwag is good and one reasons is they’ve tried to step outside the familiar sources of information in its default settings - yes there is BoingBoing but there is also Le Monde. There is Digg but there is also Fuzz, BarCamps and no TechCrunch, Slashdot and one or two freaky bloggers.

In terms of diversifying views on the web, Webwag could be a free spirit, in the sense that the French normally manage to be. But Palo Alto? Don’t do it Franck.
