European Web 2.0, Ireland. Some Novel Applications, Some Not

Web 2.0 is taking off in Ireland with some 20 start ups in stealth and beta mode around the country and with a new Web 2.0 portal, hosted on protopage, a London-based start page service.
Pumps.ie looks like the prototype for numerous pricing comparison applications. With Pumps you can point your mobile phone at the pumps’ wapsite and get petrol price information for garages in your immediate vicinity.
You can already see that any on-the-move information need, particularly pricing (restaurants? theatres?) could fit into the Pump shell.
There are a number of new classified sites, no question inspired by the enormous success of daft.ie (house lets and sales), which is about to start mashing maps, and myhome.ie (house sales). Self sell allows house sellers to create their own house for sale websites.
It’s early days for Web 2.0 Ireland but start-ups are getting organised and creating their own buzz. Unlike in the early days of the web, when the enterprise suport system balked at innovation, this time round it looks like there will be plenty of public, angel, seed and VC backing.
