Social networks - And Will They Survive

The issue of social-networks survival possibilities was raised yesterday at various places but I picked up on it at bokardo.
In the recent past we’ve seen the hype machine at work on collaboration software - Groove is probably the best known social network precursor (socialtext too).
Will social networks survive? It’s taken them six years to get this far which is a much longer span of time than it took for the Beatles to become a global name and change the face of music.
There is an issue of which on the many new content formats and channels will prove most popular. These formats (see yesterday’s post) are competitive and
a. Users have limited time and attention
b. Services that aggregate content types therefore look favourite
c. MySpace aggregates all media formats and channels and that’s why it’s today’s favourite.
If you look at these products in the long line of content morphs there’s nothing so special about social networks and their ultra-rapid rise - it’s like, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who…. .
