Categorising Content

A quick look at the different types of content out there shows we’ve come a long way since media meant TV, radio, newspapers and magazines.

1. Video uploads (YouTube, mass and Viewdo, niche)
2. Pocast/vidcasts (Rocketboom and then some)
3. Blog aggregation (Blogbridge)
4. Start pages (Netvibes, pageflake)
5. Online movies (many of them but I’m thinking of pure plays like Venice Strand)
6. Mobisodes (Prison Break)
7. Domain parking (!)
8. Portals (MSN etc)
9. Online magazines (Salon)
10. Mobile content (via channels suported by SMS.ac, bango.com)
11. Mashups
12. Blogs and moblogs
13. Mixed media (mediaStorm.org, Take 3)
14. Virtual environments (Second LIfe)
15. Online games
16. Classifieds (yes Craig Newmark categorises classifieds as content people enjoy surfing)

That’s quite a list and probably incomplete but still, quite a lot for the ad agency business to take in.
