That Old Pipeline Again - Eprécis

The people behind eprécis are clearly having fun.

The application summarises any text document (I know Word has that functionality too) but eprécis applies it to search returns.

In fact they have many applications areas but I trialed only the search returns element.

Enter your search term and eprécis will give you back your regular search return summary plus a more sophisticated verseion with additional detail.

In an idea world the extra detail should allow you to decide if the page/site is worth visiting, or indeed decide if you can get by with just what is in the summary.

How well does it work? It varies. I used the search term European Web 2.0 so it returned a few of my own blogposts.

Just by virtue of being a journalist I tend to use the first sentence to create sense out of the whole article I’m writing and I have to say sadly that made eprécis’s summary less effective than the search engines which just pulled my first line.

On other sites though it worked increasingly well providing real clues to what was in the page the search engine wanted me to see.

Some way from the finished article I hope these guys pull through.
