European Web 2.0 All Peers

AllPeers is a browser extension which combines “the strength of Firefox and the efficiency of BitTorrent to transform your favorite browser into a media sharing powerhouse.” I wonder if that was written before or after Flock launched.

AllPeers sell is that it uses an inteerface with no sign up or upload to allow you to share whatever media you wish to, in effect allowing you to create and participate in peer-2-peer networks.

There have been two big pushes in Europe over the past five years, two priorities which the European eco-system has happily fostered.

The first is open source software. Even the bigwigs in the EU , in fact especially the bigwigs, have promoted open source as a way of chiselling away at American software dominance.

The second is peer-to-peer for much the same reason.

Both fit also with the predominently left leaning character of European intellectuals and politicians.

AllPeers is headquartered in Oxford England with a software team in Prague. The product was reviewed here recently. This is what management had to say and it pretty much highlights AllPeer’s ambitions and llmits:

“AllPeers is designed for sharing specific files with specific people in your buddy list. When you share, metadata about all the files is sent to the recipient, so they can immediately see thumbnails, file sizes, etc. without having to search for anything. This approach is inherently ill-suited to sharing huge numbers of, say, MP3s with a bunch of people. Note also that sharing copyrighted content is not allowed according to our Terms of Service. The bottom line is that people who are expecting AllPeers to be the ultimate darknet tool are going to be disappointed.

On the other hand people who are looking for a way to share files conveniently and efficiently with their friends, family and colleagues will find it to be a very compelling product.”
